No wonder architecture lovers come visit Barcelona over and over again and no wonder they tend to rent holiday apartments when visiting Barcelona.
Barcelona is a mediterranean paradise of unique architecture, long white sand beaches, excellent nightlife and a distinctly international culture. The city is one of many contrasts, where fairytale like churches spiral towards the blazing heat of the Iberian sun reflected by modernist skyscrapers and deep azure seas.
Most people visit Barcelona for one of two reasons: to explore the architecture and to experience what are to many – some of the best beaches in the world. Lets start with the architecture. The most obvious of which are those of the Architect Antoni Gaudi. Notably the Parc Guell, the Sagrada Familia in the Eixample side of town and the houses La Pedrera/ Casa Mila and La Casa Bastllo which are both also in Eixample. From all of these we think that the most vital for any Gaudi enthusiast to see is the stunning La Sagrada Familia or the Basílica y Templo Expiatorio de la Sagrada Familia. The height of the towers and intricate style of the temple provides a breathtaking visage – a sort of structural pyrotechnic – that continues to impress even the most seasoned of travellers – despite that fact that La Sagrada Familia remains unfinished even to this day. You’ll spot Gaudi’s signature style all over the city from bus stops and mosaic terraces, to colourful houses and the wondrous eclectic collection on offer in Park Güell.
Besides the architecture – another favourite part of Barcelona are the beautiful beaches. Indeed even National Geographic have in the past named Barcelona as the number one beach city in the entire world, and with the pristine white sands and the deep blue hues of the seas it’s so very easy to see why. Sant Sebastia in the is a popular spot with the locals, while Sant Miquel and Llevant are two of the city’s busiest beaches. We love to take a slightly different view of the city – from the sky. Simply head to the port and take the cable car over Barcelona to marvel at the beautiful beaches and contrasting architectural styles from Gaudi to Norman Foster – before stopping at Montjuic hill – where you can explore the fascinating Castell de Montjuïc – which is an antique fortress that dates back to the 1600’s and overlooks the city from the hill. If you’re an art aficionado then be sure to visit the Joan Miro Foundation, a vast museum which houses more than 14,000 of Joan Miro’s works – including everything from early sketches to sculptures such as his Mercury Fountain and Bird on a Brach. On the hill there’s also a scenic Botanical Garden, the Pavelló Alemany (German Pavilion) and the romantic Teatre Grec (Greek Theatre) – which is an ancient-style (built in 1929) amphitheater that hosts open air
performances all through the year.
