Family Friendly holidays in Barcelona
Barcelona is well known the world over as one of, if not the, top city destination in Spain and though its popularity with couples and younger crowds as always been evident – it’s only recently that families from all over the world have realised the great city’s potential as a family holiday destination. If you’re travelling with the family then you should rent a family friendly apartment in Barcelona to make the most of the home-like quality of convenience that holiday apartments afford.
To help you plan your itinerary we’ve listed a few of our favourite family-friendly attractions in Barcelona below:
Parc d’Atraccions Tibidabo
In-between visits to museums and tastes of some of Spain’s finest cuisine we recommend you take the kids to the very top of Tibidabo where you’ll find not just incredible views out over the city – but also a funfair complete with a colourful ferris wheel and a quaint collection of rides for all ages. It dates back to 1889, and as well as the rides there are hourly puppet shows at the Marionetàrium and over the weekends, there are circus parades at the end of the day and in summer there are fireworks and street theatre.
The Museum of Inventions and Ideas was originally designed for adults, but as any parent will tell you – once there you won’t be able to drag your kids away. The museum is full of wacky ideas and ingenious inventions, and most interestingly, at the Minimiba, 5- to 12-year-olds can submit their own ideas and every month three of the best ideas are turned into prototypes by a team of builders. In such an incredibly creative city – where one can barely cross the road without bumping into one of Gaudi’s creations – your children won’t be short of inspiration.
Zoo de Barcelona
The Barcelona zoo is mostly popular due to the regular dolphin shows – but your kids will no doubt fall in love with the giant hippos, rhinos, sea lions, elephants, giraffes, lions and tigers too. Those with very young children might want to take a peak at the farmyard zoo, pony rides, picnic areas and the two excellent playgrounds. If you don’t fancy navigating the zoo by foot then you should take the zoo train. Best time to visit is in Spring when the temperatures are more manageable both for you and the animals – who are kept inside when it’s too cold and hiding away in the shade when it’s too hot.
Family-friendly walking tours
Take your family for a guided walk of the beautiful and magical Gothic Quarter – listen to medieval stories and colourful fairytales – visit wood-working workshops, learn about Barcelona’s Roman roots and enjoy the treasures of some of Barcelona’s most coveted sweet-shops. There are lots of tours in and around Barcelona that are suitable for the family – but Runner Bean Tours have some of the better ones – with interactive discussions and plenty of live entertainment to keep even the most fussy child occupied. Better still – if you rent a family friendly apartment in Barcelona Gothic Quarter – you’ll be able to learn all about the locale!
If you decide to rent a family-friendly apartment in Barcelona for your holiday then there is no better way to spend a day than relaxing at home, preferably in the garden or on the terrace, with a glass or two of wine (juice for the kids of course) – and some home made food. We have a wonderful selection of homes suitable for families – though one of our favourites is in the Alella area and comes with a beautiful large garden with a barbecue, sea and mountain views and a communal swimming pool – perfect for relaxing under the Catalan sun.
